Striker Acquision Strategy...
We desperately need another quality Goal scorer ...12+ goals a season...to target top 6-8th regularly ...

Buy one at the 20 million mark......

...or a couple with potential like Sakho at 8-10million each...

Will the Chairmen do it next summer...and which way is best...

We rarely do well buying strikers...

QPR will struggle to come up so I suppose we'll be linked with AUSTIN again.

Agree, we should have done this last summer though instead of wasting 10m odd on Jelavic and Antonnio.

I think the amount we spend is less important than the type of striker we go for. If we are going to continue to play on the counter we need another fast, mobile type who can ply up top on his own.

Ighalo. Break the bank for him.

I've seen enough to know he won't be a one season wonder, the lad has got IT

Doumbia and Zaza already linked with us. Both better than what we've got. Trouble is we have to get Carroll out first.

£20 million.!

Turn it in Tex. The Spunk Brothers will get someone between the price of fuck. And all. We be lucky if we sign Charlton again. A penny won't be spent between now and the summer.Unless the bottom 4 start displaying any kind of form before the end of January.!

Re: Striker Acquision Strategy...
Interesting topic.

Nobody predicted Ighalo or Vardy's success this season. Not sure how many would have been lining up to buy 5-goals-last-season Vardy. Neither cost anywhere the sort of figures we're talking about. I think they confound the established wisdom about players as well - there's a lot for recruitment departments to ponder about them.

I think the problem with buying an expensive new striker is that their actual chances of delivering might be no better than the strikers we already have. That's a lot of money to waste. Any player with the guarantee of goals will be desired by almost any club in the league - even Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool are pretty desperate for guaranteed goals right now.

The plan first has to be to develop strikers. Either ones that we find as the unfinished article, or from the youth ranks. That's the most cost-effective and potentially most rewarding route, but it can't be done overnight.

I think the sort of budget we would be better off looking at would be the sub-£5m and free transfer market, and obviously prioritising younger players. You can take more risks at that price, and also spread that risk over more signings. I'd like to aim to see a couple of U-21 strikers around the first team squad by next season.

Although it's a mixed blessing, we are likely to still have Sakho, Carroll and Jelavic at the club by the start of next season, so there's plenty of plan Bs available.

I think a growing phenomena might well be striker burnout - the idea that strikers can only really cope with the physical and mental demands of the premiership for a year or two before the rot sets in. I think there are a growing number of examples of that around, and I think we should be bearing that in mind before giving out any long contracts.

Costa. Michu. Rooney. Benteke. Cisse. Bony. Torres. Pelle. Gomis. Carroll. Just a few off the top of my head. Obviously some of these are debatable, and it's hard to tell what is burnout and what is genuine injury or regression to the mean etc.

I think even Aguero, who is still one of the best players in the World, is just not the player he was physically and mentally imo. I think there's a massive toll of playing week in week out in this league, and it shows up most with strikers. It's a struggle to actually name a striker who has remained prolific at this level for a number of seasons.

Sturridge, Rodriguez, Remy, Dzeko, Lambert, Agbonlahor.

Re: Striker Acquision Strategy...
Interesting list and there are only two who I would say are burnt out. One is Rooney who is clearly some way past his best. He started young though and has a lot of miles on the clock. Michu is a one season wonder for me so he has returned to his norm. As for the others none of them have a record of scoring prolifically over a couple of Premiership seasons other than Torres so he would be my other candidate.

Don't think Remy has had that many games since he moved to Chelsea has he?

Re: Striker Acquision Strategy...
Alex I think your strategy in the modern football world is flawed. Burn out you can't even prove and even if you could, are you seriously suggesting short term contracts on the theory of potential burn out?
Decent strikers are as rare as rocking horse shit and in this massively competitive league offering a short term contract when there are a boat load of clubs willing to sell their grannies to get a decent striker, I think you'll find will fail miserably.
